That was the British, who sailed up the Chesapeake and torched DC, but we ever-so-narcissistic Canadians love to take credit for that to massage our inflated egos. I imagine the Brits just humour us as they had bigger fish to fry on the other side of the Atlantic at the time. As for this spat between Canada and the United States, a more canny operator like the Chretien, Martin, or Harper governments could have salvaged something, but we have the self-obsessed manchild who yearns for the (nonexistent) Canada of his sheltered youth. There is no reason to stand behind him when his ineptness is already straining the bonds of Confederation.
