We haven't stopped smallpox. It's jsut sitting in labs waiting to get out.

I recognize the benefit of vaccines. But I think that unless there is an overriding public health concern, we shouldn't be forcing needles into people.

Regina Regina:
BartSimpson BartSimpson:

Measles was eradicated in the US prior to the new variant coming in from Latin America with all the kids Obama let into the country in 2014. Prior to this there was more risk to American kids from a needless vaccination than there was from a disease we'd eradicated. Case in point of myself getting the MMR at age 14 and spending a night in the hospital with severe reactions to the vaccination.

The snarky folks who are making fun of people for not having the measles vaccine should immediately run out and get themselves vaccinated for smallpox lest they appear ignorant to their snarky friends.

Putting politics way out front of science and common sense makes you look quite foolish.

Up until this current outbreak of measles a large number of doctors in the US didn't see a reason to vaccinate kids for measles, mumps, and rubella. Most school districts didn't care, either.

The only reason we have a problem now is because of Obama's politics of trying to make the US southern border an open border. Obama has also insisted that illegal alien kids who have NOT been vaccinated should be allowed to attend US public schools...even those schools that REQUIRE vaccinations.

http://dailycaller.com/2014/09/10/feds- ... screening/

$1:
Instead, the federal government has sent the unaccompanied minors to various U.S. locations to live with relatives or, in some cases, to live as foster wards. The children then enroll in local, taxpayer-funded public schools with no questions asked — by law.

Dr. Elaina George, a member of the national advisory council of the Project 21 black leadership network and a board-certified otolaryngologist, warned that this policy adds up to the possibility of a very serious disease outbreak.

“There’s no mechanism in place to ensure children are checked medically,” George told The Daily Caller. “It’s put everybody at risk. Anybody who comes into contact with a disease — tuberculosis, for example — is at risk.”

So what were you saying about putting politics way out front of science and common sense making someone look foolish?

Delwin Delwin:

Characterization of pandemic influenza immune memory signature after vaccination or infection

http://m.jci.org/articles/view/74565

This study is about seasonal influenza outbreaks, caused by genetic reassortment among different strains and subtypes. The study was also done for future design of effective influenza vaccines and the end result difference is only measureable in a study such as this. You must also realize that this is the flue shot that they give based on a prediction of the prevalent strain they expect. This year's prediction was a swing and a miss based on early reports from the district health units, although they are still endorsing the current flue shot program. Either way this is usually a seasonal (winter) event and hardly similar to a vaccination you get once to protect you for life.

Facepalm.

Vaccines prevent overriding public health concerns.

I think with Immigration there's a health screening they must go through and I'm sure Vaccinations are required, or proof there of. Could be wrong but I'm sure I've heard about the process including it.

Yes...correct.

My family had to provide proof of vaccinations against a variety of common disease's, measles being one.
We were also asked if we were immune to hockey fever. :D

It depends on your definition of overriding, I suppose. Unlike you, I believe in the freedom of the individual to make his or her own choices, good or bad. A Medical Health Officer can override your fundamental rights (such as freedom from arbitrary detainment) if the risk is sufficient.

Measles and the flu don't rate, in my opinion. Not every risk requires a massive state intervention.

I argue with people all the time who think that climate change is a bunch of crap. It's quite similar to t3eh vaccination argument; these people believe what they believe and are immune to reason because of their strong beliefs. As a result we won';t do anything about climate change and our children will suffer. But do I advocate that we silence critics of climate change, on the grounds of overall public good--no.

I suppose I should have stated blind politics, as you have now made that even clearer.
Looking back at your first post you claimed Measles were "eradicated in the US" which flat out never happened. You then seem to feel that the only way a highly contagious airborne disease can appear in the US comes from Obama "sending unaccompanied minors to various U.S. locations" while completely ignoring the 19.9 million Americans who visited Mexico last year, and as many as 1 million U.S. citizens that live there according to U.S. government estimates. If the ENT doctor feels this policy adds up to the possibility of a very serious disease outbreak, then she should be shitting in her pants.

It does when your medical infrastructure is built and maintained to a vaccinated population assumption.

We do not have the medical infrastructure to handle 100% of the current medical needs...let's add on something that is largely preventable, for what? Funsies?

Aside from that, if the only vaccines that were being opted out of were flu and MMR, I wouldn't care (see my first post in this thread), but that is not the case. People are opting out of all vaccines...including the 5 in 1 which protects us from things a tad nastier than the flu and measles.

Why don't they rate?

I'll answer the question for you.

Vaccinations.

You really need to brush up on the history of this disease.

I should point out that I didn't get a flue shot this year and am going to rely on the rest of the people I come in contact with to not be sick and pass on something to me.
I got one last year and nothing happened.......so screw it.
