Ukrainian soldiers authorized to use weapons by acting president

Ukrainian soldiers serving in Crimea have been authorized to use their weapons to defend themselves, according to the acting Ukrainian president's press service.

The order comes only hours after a Ukrainian serviceman was shot and killed on Tuesday at a Ukrainian base that came under attack in Crimea's main town of Simferopol and acting Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk said the Crimean conflict has now entered a "military phase."

PostFactum: I must mention how much I admire the restraint of the Ukrainian people through the events of the last couple of weeks. For what it's worth, you have won the moral battle by keeping your heads. That will count for something important in the long run, I would hope.

Ukraine crisis gets the anime treatment. Can it get any better than this?

They drew her having big boobs!

Creeping insanity everywhere, as highlighted by legions of demented basement-dwelling otaku commenting through their preferred medium on critical world events? Looks like Azathoth may have won. Marty and Rust might have had it easy having to deal with mere ol' Hastur. 8O :|

Ukraine Plans to Pull Military From Crimea, Conceding Loss
SEVASTOPOL, Crimea — Bowing to the reality of the Russian military occupation of Crimea a day after Russia announced it was annexing the disputed peninsula, the Ukrainian government said on Wednesday that it had drawn up plans to evacuate all of its military personnel and their families and was prepared to relocate as many as 25,000 of them to mainland Ukraine.

Thousands of Ukrainian soldiers and sailors have been trapped on military bases and other installations here for more than two weeks, surrounded by heavily armed Russian military forces and loosely organized local militia.

While the provisional government in Kiev has insisted that Russia’s annexation of Crimea is illegal and has appealed to international supporters for help, the evacuation announcement by the head of the national security council, Andriy Parubiy, effectively amounted to a surrender of Crimea, at least from a military standpoint.

True. Give it a year or two after whatever's left of Ukraine builds some nukes and then we'll see what happens.

Hmm. The Russian propaganda has been slandering the Ukrainians as fascists and ultranationalists and in the aftermath of this combination blitzkrieg and anschluss the Russians may well end up with an ultranationalist heavily militarized enemy on their borders.

Wouldn't it be fitting for Putin if the Ukrainians someday invade and subdue Russia and then prosecute and execute an aging Putin for his crimes?

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
