Truckers from across Canada were fuming Wednesday night as word spread that Ontario police fined a driver $305 for smoking in his rig, which the law considers his workplace.

I'm sure the truckers are quite happy to consider it a workplace when it comes to the enforcement of occupational health and safety laws. In that case it works to their advantage.

Good point.

Not if he owns it. Then its just a load of bull that costs a lot of money.

If he doesn't own it, and he drives several trucks a week, who all smell like smoke while you are not a smoker, THEN I can understand you are glad people cant smoke in a truck.

Smoking in my workplace isn't a criminal offense?

Not yet, but I'm sure Uncle Stevie's considering it.

Excuse me but wasn't it the governing Liberal party that inacted this law? What does "Uncle Stevie" have to do with it?

Just sayin'

Because we were talking about the right of police to enter homes. They can only do that if they have a warrant or see a crime in progress. Criminal offenses are Federal not Provincial, so when we're talking about Criminal offenses, it's Uncle Stevie's domain, not Cousin Dalton's. Try to follow along.

See Lemmy, you get it.

A cop enacting a provincial by-law about work place smoking on a guy having a smoke in the truck he owns.

And he gets a ticket off the the cops? This is absolute bollocks. This is looking for an offence.
This is personal. And the personal application of obscure laws by the police makes us all look bad. I have made some calls on this.

The OPP doesn't make the laws, remember that. It is not the OPPs job to make the laws only enforce them. Which why I laugh when people complain about police cracking down on traffic violations saying "Don't they have better things to do?" Enforcing traffic laws are part of the OPP's job.

This Const. Coulter is all over the place here. The man was fined for smoking in the workplace. If that's the case then maybe is Const. Coulter should keep her opinion to herself about how smoking and driving can be dangerous. It's not against the law. And in my opinion, your vehicle is not a place.

So the whole point of the law is to prevent others from being exposed to 2nd hand smoke in their workplace. Not to prevent someone who smokes from smoking.
But now it's a LAW and there's a COP involved, the point of the law is moot. It CAN and MUST be enforced regardless of any common sense whatsoever.
I hope the Desk Seargant smokes and fires the rookie's ass. That's what makes some people hate cops. Power tripping shithead.

Now how many of you guys were in the mandatory breathalyzer thread ready to hand more power to these dipshits?
None of you ever walked into City Hall and had someone say "You want to build new stairs,eh? Well here's the permit package and building code you'll need."
You grew up with a room full of Civil Servants who tell you YOU CAN'T - NO - WE'LL FINE YOU and think that's normal.
